Love

What is love?

The idea of love refers to a person’s wide range of robust and positive emotional states. Love encompasses everything from the most sublime good intentions and the deepest interpersonal affections to complicated pleasures. It also defines the person’s mental state as a feeling of a strong attraction and emotional attachment to someone.

The feeling of love can be displayed positively and negatively. Positive love represents human benevolence, compassion, and affection towards other fellow beings, as the most unselfish, unconditional, and honest form of concern for their good. And harmful because sometimes its vice represents a human’s moral flaws, akin to narcissism, selfishness, egoism, and amour-propre, potentially leading them into mania or obsessiveness.

Love defines the purest form of compassion and affection towards other humans, oneself, or animals because it is the primary factor that describes interpersonal relationships. It is the most common intention of psychological importance.

Love has an additional religious and spiritual meaning, which diversifies its implications with the complexities of feelings and emotions involved compared to other emotional states.

The word ‘love’ can also have a variety of distinct meanings in different contexts. Cultural descriptions conceptualize love as an impediment to established universal definitions—the initial identification of ‘love’ ages back to Greek philosophies and concepts by the ancient philosophers.

Ancient Greek philosophers gestate love into six different forms: familial love (Greek- Storge), friendly love (Philia), romantic love (Eros), self-love (Philautia), divine love (Agape), and guest love (Xenia).

Definitions Of Love

Modern Definition

Modern scholars have distinguished other notable meanings of love, including unrequited, empty, consummate, companionate, courtly, and infatuated love. Legion cultures have also described unique words, definitions, or expressions of love concerning specific “junctures,” which are not very popular. Some of them are- Ren, Yuanfen, Cafune, Kama, Mamihlapinatapai, Ishq, Amore, Chesed, Bhakti, Saudade.

Further, interpersonal love refers to the affection and care between human beings, family, couples, or friends. It is a much more influential sentiment than simply liking another person. Interpersonal love is closely related to interpersonal relationships between people.

Scientific Definition

Several advancements have occurred in the studies researching different ranges of human emotions. The color wheel theory of love delineates three primary, three secondary, and nine tertiary love styles in the traditional color wheel. This triangular concept of love determines intimacy, passion, and commitment- the core fundamentals of love. Science also defines love as a ‘chemical’ force driven by specific hormones in the human body. While these chemicals are often stereotyped as male and female hormones, they play the same role.

Varying Perspectives On Love

Love can have different meanings based on an individual’s encounters. However, love can also have varying perspectives depending on what state people experience it in. Here are some of the perspectives individuals can experience love from.

Impersonal

Love is not always between human beings. Sometimes it also describes the love for objects, principles, or a goal to which a person is profoundly and enthusiastically committed because they identify it as one of great value. People can also show their concern and love for material objects, animals, or other exciting activities. It is because the bonding matters more than anything else in love.

Political

The term “free love” is related to the political viewpoint on love. It historically describes a social movement that dismisses the idea of marriage (which is seen as a form of social bondage). The initial motive of the Free Love Movement was to scatter the state from matters like marriage, birth control, and adultery. It was because the movement claimed that these matters were only the concern of the individuals involved and no one else. The predetermined vision of strongly defined gender roles provoked the upsurge of the Free Love Movement as a contrasting feature.

Philosophical

The philosophical viewpoints on love suggest love is a field of social ideology and ethics that attempts to determine the nature of love. It further includes an exploration of love that incorporates the schedule of distinguishing forms of personal love, probing about the value of love and what impact love has on both the lover and the beloved.

Religious

According to contemporary Indian literature, the Sanskrit word for love is “Sneha.” “Priya” defines innocent love, and “Prema” refers to spiritual love. In Hinduism, “Kama” represents a pleasurable, sexual love personified by the God Kamadeva.

The concept of Kama is recorded in some of the earliest known verses in Vedas (for instance, in the book of Rig Veda). Moreover, the term also signifies sensory enjoyment, emotional attachment, and aesthetic pleasure in art, dance, music, painting, and nature.

In the “Bhakti” tradition within the same religious realm, it is believed that the execution of devotional practices to God leads to the expansion of love for the almighty.

Self-love

Self-love refers to the state of appreciation and acceptance that an individual generates for oneself from the behavioral patterns that support our physical, psychological, spiritual peace, and growth.

In other words, self-love is the high regard, and priority one has for one’s well-being, happiness and contentment. Taking care of yourself and your desires and not surrendering your peace of mind to please others is only one aspect of self-love. All the material and non-material things that make a person happy constitute self-love.

The first step to self-love is always accepting oneself with all the flaws within and outside. It happens gradually to persuade ourselves that we are deserving of all the love in this world. As a result, in the process, we slowly indulge in the good qualities that we manifest in our lives.

Self-love is important because it also has an emotional significance. People who love themselves are more likely to experience less anxiety and depression and, in turn, pave a positive mindset for personal growth. Learning to self-love reduces stress and caters to a healthy and happy being. Love is a strong and pleasant emotional and mental state that includes sublime virtue, deep interpersonal affection, and simple joy. A mother’s love differs from a spouse’s love, which differs from a food lover’s love. Love is typically defined as a strong attraction and emotional attachment. Vanity, selfishness, amour-propre, and egotism are regarded to be human moral flaws that might lead to mania, obsession, or codependency. It can also refer to loving gestures towards other humans, oneself, or animals. Love is one of the most common motifs in the creative arts, owing to its core psychological relevance. Love has been proposed as a function that keeps humans together against threats and helps the species survive. The Greeks distinguished six types of love: familial (Storge), platonic (Philia), romantic (Eros), self-love (Philautia), and divine (Xenia) (Agape). Unrequited love, empty love, companionate love, consummate love, enamoured love, self-love, and courtly love have all been defined by modern authors. In addition to Ren, Yuanfen, Mamihlapinatapai, Cafuné, Kama Bhakti Mett Ishq Chesed Amore Charity Saudade (and various versions or symbioses of these states) are culturally specific terminology, definitions, or expressions of love lacking in the English language. Emotion research has risen dramatically over the last two decades. The colour wheel theory of love defines three primary, three secondary, and nine tertiary love types. Love, according to the triangular hypothesis, is defined by “intimacy, passion, and commitment.” Love is also religious or spiritual. Love is unlike any other emotional state since it has so many functions and meanings.
